Check your Council Tax Band
It is possible that you may be in the wrong council tax band. It is estimated currently that up to 400,000 homes in both England and Scotland are in the wrong council tax band.
If your council tax band is wrong and is too high you could be overpaying council tax and could be entitled to a council tax rebate. A council tax rebate can potentially be backdated to 1993 so it is worth checking. It is also possible that you are not paying enough council tax if your tax band is too low.
The government department you will need to contact for council tax issues is The Valuation Office Agency which is responsible for banding of all homes in England and Wales Council Tax, and is an executive agency of HMRC.
